Still, Small Voice

Still, Small Voice

Have you wondered about which voice in your head is the “right” one? The one that really is your soul speaking to you? As a survivor of childhood trauma and alcoholic parents, believe me, there were many voices in my head at times. And so I argued with all of them.

“Get this done!” Seriously? I have no time or resources, how am I supposed to meet that deadline?

“Go on, eat that pizza.” I know it’s not good for me, but if you say so, I could use the comfort.

“No one loves you.” (Unfortunately, I didn’t argue this. I just accepted it too often.)

“Retie your shoes.” Are you kidding? Sure, the loops are a little big, but what’s it going to matter?

That last one, I realized way too late, WAS my higher self trying to save me from a fall. I argued and ignored it and ended up tripping myself because while I was walking at a brisk pace, my right toe went into the overly large loop of my left shoelace, and I literally fell flat on my face! And did quite a bit of damage to my arm and knee in the process. I am proud to say that I finally learned after this event to distinguish the still small voice from all the other noise in my head.

It truly IS a small quiet voice. It will not yell or argue. It doesn’t sound like your mother or father or boss. It doesn’t sound like a whiny child. It will not tell you to do anything violent or immoral. It’s so still and small, it’s almost a knowingness. I feel it in my heart and gut simultaneously, and that’s when I know I can trust it. Since that fateful fall 3 years ago, I have successfully remembered my car keys, mail and bills, connected with people at the right time, and had all kinds of confirming experiences which have increased the volume and frequency of that voice and the accompanying “knowingness” to a beautiful state of reliability. I feel like I have a “friend” in the Universe!
